"Log In to Website" or "Log On to Website"

Recently, I have frequently seen the term "登陆网站" used incorrectly and inconsistently in various newspapers, magazines, and online. Some use "登陆," while others use "登录." To avoid further spreading of these errors and to correct the improper usage, I believe it is necessary to clarify a few points.

In today's internet age, the web has become an efficient path and medium for people to search for and transmit information. The term "登陆网站" is used frequently, and its correct usage should be "登陆," not "登录." This can be seen from the distinction in meaning between the two terms.

From a semantic perspective, we know that "登陆" is a verb, which, according to the Modern Chinese Dictionary published by the Commercial Press, is defined as: "to cross the ocean or a river and land..." The key aspect here is the meaning of "to land."

From a grammatical perspective, the term "登陆" implies entering from below to above, from outside to inside. The internet, as a medium, is akin to "land," and in order to enter it from the outside, one must "登陆." Therefore, "登陆" onto the internet signifies a successful or failed entry, distinguishing between reaching a website and not reaching it.

On the other hand, the term "登录" means to record, register, or document. It emphasizes the aspect of "recording," and fundamentally lacks the meaning of "to enter" or "to log in."

Thus, whether from the perspective of meaning or grammatical usage, the correct term for accessing a website should be "登陆," and using "登录" does not make sense. Therefore, we should not confuse "登陆" and "登录."
